What Is Cellulite?

Cellulite is the build-up of fatty deposits underneath the skin. (It is perfectly normal to have these fat cells…everyone has them!) As we age, our skin and connective tissues become less elastic and supple, causing these fatty deposits to show through the skin as pock marks, bumps and dimples. Women normally carry more fat cells in their hips and thighs than men. It’s part of what gives women their “curves.” As a result, it’s much more common for women to develop cellulite.

Heredity is a key factor in whether a person develops cellulite and to what degree. If your mother or grandmother has it, you are more likely to develop it too. Other factors that affect the development of cellulite are obesity, lack of physical activity, poor diet, insufficient water intake, and hormone imbalances.

​While cellulite can be caused by any of these conditions, in and of itself cellulite is not harmful. But ask most women who have it and they’ll wish they could make it go away, or at least minimize its appearance.

First, let’s discuss what you can’t do about it. Exercising doesn’t make cellulite go away like other body fat. Losing weight and improving muscle tone may reduce its appearance, but the underlying issue is still there.
